Breast AUGMENTATION details
Breast augmentation is performed through a small incision in the breast crease, around the areola or in the axilla (armpit). This allows Dr. Watts to place an implant, either saline or silicone, into the breast pocket. Depending on the original breast size, implants are placed either under the breast gland (sub-glandular) or under the pectoralis muscle (sub-muscular). In smaller breasted patients, most implants are placed under the muscle. In the larger breasted patient, the implant can be placed under the gland.
There are benefits and pitfalls with both saline and silicone implants. These will be discussed in depth with Dr. Watts during your consultation.
After the procedure
This procedure will take approximately 1-1.5 hours and you will return home the same day. All stitches used are dissolvable and are placed under the skin so there are no stitches to remove. You may return to work within 1 week and are asked to refrain from exercise and heavy lifting during this time. You will be able to return to upper body workouts (pectoralis and lattisimus) 6 weeks post-op. Dr. Watts will also guide you with the appropriate post-operative bra and scar treatment to ensure the best appearing result.
Possible complications
Possible complications include hematoma (blood collection), seroma (fluid collection), sensory changes to the nipple, breast or nipple asymmetry, infection, nipple necrosis, DVT and PE. These risks are low and will be explained to you by Dr. Watts during your consultation.
